Chainmail Armor
Collecting and Caring for Chainmail
Chainmail is a type of armor made from interlinking rings of metal, that provides protection from piercing and slashing weapons. It comes in two main types. Open ring chain mail are rings that are bent together in specific patterns. Riveted chain mail are made of rings that are riveted together, increasing the strength and durability of the mail. There are a variety of different patterns, including the Four in One and King's Mail, which all offer different levels of protection.
A chainmail shirt for display or costuming purposes can be made of any material, and can be as decorative as the owner wants. Colored chainmail links are widely available, and there are a variety of interesting and beautiful patterns. Light weight shirts are often preferred for costuming, as chainmail is naturally heavy and can wear out the person wearing it. Steel is cheaper, but weighs much more. Aluminum is the best choice, but can raise the cost of the shirt.
Chainmail shirts intended for re-enactment, combat, or protective use must be made of the right materials to actually offer protection. The best possible choice, balancing weight and strength, is aluminum riveted King's Mail. Unfortunately, that combination of material and pattern is usually extremely expensive. Any pattern of riveted aluminum mail will be more durable and stronger than simple open ring chain mail. Each pattern increases the amount of links in each square inch, meaning more shock absorbency and weapon stopping power. A riveted steel shirt will be cheaper, but requires more upkeep and is much heavier.
Chainmail requires regular oiling, but care should be taken to find an oil that won't irritate the skin when the shirt is worn. Mineral oil is a good choice because it's safe for skin and won't go rancid. The chainmail shirt should be stored in a cloth bag with a good coating of oil on the inside of the bag, to keep it from rusting. It should also be oiled immediately after than contact with moisture. Display pieces can sprayed with a clear coating to protect it from rust without damaging the chain mail.
