Collecting Replica Armor & Shields
Collecting armor from various time periods can be a fun and entertaining hobby. Real authentic period pieces can be very expensive. Many collectors opt for the replica armor and shield pieces to complement their collection. The replica pieces are very detailed and can be mistaken for authentic pieces. An owner will want to keep them in pristine condition for the best display value.
Replica pieces require special care to keep them in the best condition possible. An important rule for any piece of armor, is to never use household cleaners to clean or polish the armor. This can cause serious and permanent damage. The armor will most likely arrive in an oil or gel coating. This should be removed with a soft cloth towel as soon as it is opened. Reapply another oil coating before displaying.
Caring for Your Collection
Special oils should be used to prevent rust about every 30 days. There are special mineral based cleansers that can be purchased for the cleaning of the replica armor. In most situations the armor should not need to be cleaned, only polished. After cleaning the armor should be rubbed down with oil. Use a soft cloth that is only used for oiling the armor.
Replica armor pieces should be handled with care as well. If a piece is meant to be collectible it should not be used in any kind of fashion. Display only use can preserve a piece of armor an extended amount of time. If possible keep the armor in a cabinet to avoid excessive dust. The armor should be dusted regularly to keep off harmful oxygen particles that can be trapped under the dust.
The armor and shields should be kept dry at all times. If it does happen to get wet it should be wiped down immediately and another oil coating should be rubbed on. The oil is a lot like a barrier or shield against harmful oxygen particles.
