About Schrade

The Schrade brand is still well-respected and trusted among knife customers. Though some of the brand's credibility was lost in 2004 with the closing of the original company, Taylor Brands continues to manufacture high-quality knives of the same name. The knives are no longer manufactures within the USA (they are now made in China), which has definitely contributed to some loss of value of the brand: even on auction sites, the old USA-made knives sell much higher than the newer knives manufactured by Taylor Brands. The Schrade name has not been traded on the stock market since Baer bought out all the stock many years ago (Taylor Brands is a Limited Liability Company rather than a corporation), so it is difficult to assess objective market value. Nevertheless, clearly Taylor Brands has some catching-up to do to fully satisfy its customer base.

History Of Schrade

Schrade Cutlery, Co. first began manufacturing high-quality knives in 1904 and quickly became a trusted brand among hunters, fishermen, and other outdoorsmen. They became particularly famous for their utility knives: especially folding, jackknife, and several-bladed knives. In the mid-1940s, the company joined the Imperial Knife Associated Companies under the direction of Albert M. Baer, and was renamed the Schrade Walden Cutlery Corporation. They celebrated their 100th anniversary in 2004, with 450 employees in their Ellenville, New York headquarters. Just three years later, in 2007, the company closed its doors. Taylor Brands, LLC today holds the license of the Schrade brand and manufactures knives under that name.
