BloodRayne is a popular video game series that has also inspired two movies, with a third planned, and a series of comic books. The franchise presents the story of Rayne, a dhampir (or half-vampire), employed by the secretive Brimstone Society in the time just before World War II to hunt down and exterminate supernatural menaces. In the course of her adventures, Rayne fights Nazi occultists, abominations, mutants, demons, and especially other vampires, including her own father, Kagan, the King of Vampires. She fights the enemies of humanity armed with a variety of weapons, guns, and her own vampiric abilities, but her most striking weapon is her "arm blades."

The arm blades are unique in their design, and look like no other weapon. Rather than having the hilt at the base of the blade, as with a traditional sword, the arm blades have hilts projecting halfway down the blade, with straps at the base to fasten them to her forearms, so they are used more like a Japanese tonfa than an ordinary sword. Thus prepared, Rayne can wield the blades with graceful and deadly sweeps of her arms to carve her way through the hordes of inhuman opponents unfortunate enough to get in her way.
