The Cane Sword Holds an Important Place in History

Remember James Bond, or even the series Get Smart. The agents always had these nifty canes that functioned as swords, or as a hiding place for small guns or weapons. These cane swords actually existed, and today, we see references to them in movies, or martial art films. They are those sticks that the specialists use when attacked unknowingly and they ward off their opponents, or even killed them.

It is not known where the cane sword originated, but is mostly associated with the Samurai or the Japanese. Because of its notability in these two cultures, it made itself fashionable in other cultures too. It became an auxiliary weapon or a place to conceal other weapons. It soon became a popular man's accessory in Europe and was used in by many wealthy people.

The Origins of the Cane Sword

In Japan during the feudal era it was used as a tool, especially during the reign of Meiji who would not allow the Samurai to carry their swords out in open. The cane sword was also used by the Ninja, the most elite of Japan's warriors.

The cane sword was not well suited to long battles because it was not strong enough. It often fell apart after just a few swings. However sword smiths began working on the quality of the cane sword and soon improved it. Some of the later made ones really could withstand a great deal of punishments.

Today, for the most part the cane sword is a collectors or decorative item. There are some companies that still offer authentic cane swords, but these are rarely used. Many countries have even outlawed them because they are used to carry concealed weapons. Still they are gorgeous additions to any collection and even if you cannot carry it out in public, it makes an amazing accessory to a man's wardrobe. For some reason a man just seems stronger, and in control with a cane stick. It may just be the portrayal that the media has given this wonderful ancient weapon that causes us to have this image of this sword.

Although the cane sword was not as impressive as those made of steel. It has still held an important position in history. It is a fascinating instrument because no one expects a wooden stick to be strong enough to hurt an opponent. We all believe that it's ability to do so is based solely on the users skill, but in reality the cane sword does have to be made well enough to withstand at least one skirmish.
