The History of the Short Sword

Short swords are one of our legacies. They have been used since ancient times and perfected by civilizations like the Romans, who had many types of these short swords which were adapted from the Greeks or other civilizations that they came into contact with. Today, many people collect short swords because of the ingenuity they were created with, and because of their beauty.

Throughout the ages there have been legendary swordsmen, and they have existed in every culture for the last 3,000 years. Even today, they are used in ceremonies, sports, and have long been sought out as collectibles.

There are different types of collectible short swords and they can be heirlooms for any variety of reasons. They may denote a persons military service, a person's heritage, or they may just remind a person of a favorite historical era.

People of all walks of life collect swords. Some are history buffs, others just like the way the swords look and still others are handed down a collection and add interesting swords to it from different eras. It's a matter of the type of collection you have.

There are however tow different types of collectible short swords. There are functional swords and display short swords.

Functional Short Swords

These are reproduced to be like the original sword in every sense of the word. They are made of the actual materials, the real ones were made of, and what makes these short swords popular is the actual authenticity. There is a great deal of effort put into every detail.

Display Short Swords

These are much lighter and not made to be authentic or functional. By the same token they are also less expensive than the functional swords. These are made more for decorative purposes than for any real functionality. They are made to exhibit on the walls or on stands.

The type you get really depends on the type of short sword collection you are buying it for. Obviously, if every other sword is functional then you should get a functional short sword. However if the collection is based purely on design then you could well do with a display sword.
