The History of the Quarterstaff
During the medieval times in the 1500's, the Quarterstaff was the weapon of choice. A quarterstaff is a weapon that was designed back during the medieval times. Sometimes, when people made these weapons, they had tips or caps on one end and in some cases, both ends. These weapons are made of wood and come in different lengths. The lengths are in range from 6 to 9 feet for a typical one. And the longer ones are from 12 to 18 feet in length. The weight of the wood on the weapon is even although with tip or cap at the end would add additional weight to it. London Masters of Defence favoured these weapons. By the 1700's they became more popular and were modified for fencing. By the late 1800's the Aldershot Military Training School just southwest of London, modified another version of this weapon by using bamboo or ash staves and trained people to learn boxing, fencing and cricket with this new version.
The Quarterstaff in Middle Ages
During the middle ages, all men not only had to have the right weapon, but they also had to have the skills because this was an extremely violent time. Even though the quarterstaff was cheap to make, it was still produced and sold quite a bit. Although it was commonly used by the lower class people, knights and nobles still used these weapons. The advantage to using this weapon was that it was extremely versatile. The blows form them were as if you got hit by a spear. Another advantage of using this weapon was the length.
When training to use this weapon, a pole was fixed on a platform that moved while you was on it. And at the head and foot height were heavy wooden rods attached horizontally. While the men stood on the moving platform, they had to duck and jump to avoid getting knocked off. If a man wasn't protected with the proper gear, he would risk his head getting crushed when struck by this weapon. Another name for the quarterstaff was a Stave or Balkstaff. This weapon was in a group of weapons called Bludgeoning Weapons.
