The Medieval Flail A Devastating Force

During the Medieval period battles raged all across Europe, as feudal Lords fought to gain power and territories. The Crusades were in full swing as the Crusaders fought to claim control of the Holy Land. And during this period the fierce battles called upon unusual courage, skill and weapons.

Few Medieval weapons could spark more fear than a Medieval Flail. A simply designed weapon, that generated massive power and devastating effect upon those in its path.

The beauty of the Medieval Flail was in its simple design. Initially, the Medieval Flail was a short wooden handle attached to a steel or iron ball with a chain. As the Medieval Flail is swung around, it literally can triple the striking force. It was prized for its power and its ability to deliver a devastating blow, as well as the added reach it provided its user, including the ability to strike over an opponents shield.

As word of the power this weapon spread, the simple ball on the end was modified to have large spikes attached. These added spikes proved deadly to Knights wearing even the finest armor, as the Medieval Flail could deliver a strike powerful enough to drive these deadly spikes through the best armor. Later, variations were made which had multiple smaller balls attached. A Medieval Flail now could be seen with from one to as many as three spiked balls attached.

A Medieval Flail soon became a close quarters weapon of choice for many Knights as well as foot soldiers. A mounted Knight could use his Flail from atop his mount and create havoc and fear to his opponent, striking over shields as he drove the spiked balls into the armor of his opponent.

Carried as an offensive weapon, it was of limited use defensively, but the fear and devastation it showed on Medieval Battlefields made it an offensive weapon sure be be carried into battle by the finest Knights.
