Indiana Jones Whip
Collecting Indiana Jones Whip Replicas
There are only a select few fictional characters that are immediately recognizable by just a quick glimpse of their silhouette. Picture in your mind, a dust covered Egyptian pyramid. All of a sudden, a shadow slowly appears upon the pyramid wall. It is the shadow of a man in a crooked fedora with a bullwhip attached to his belt. Music quietly begins to play in the back of your mind. That man is Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones Jr., the world famous adventurer / archeologist.
Few weapons are as old as the whip. It has been used for herding cattle and exacting punishment on unfortunate people. The Indiana Jones Whip is rarely used as a weapon; instead, he capitalizes on its practical value. Throughout such classic films as "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Temple of Doom," "The Last Crusade," and "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" Dr. Jones has used his whip primarily as a devise for transportation. He lashes the whip out until it catches hold of something and then he dramatically swings through the air.
George Lucas created Indiana Jones by combining the traits he admired in the heroes of 1930's serial movies. Since then, the character, most notably portrayed by Harrison Ford, has been featured in four feature films, a television series entitled "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles," and video games such as the recent "Staff of Kings." In each of these incarnations, the character's signature piece of equipment is his trusty Indiana Jones Whip. This is the whip that slashed the scar across his chin when he was just a boy in "The Last Crusade" and it is the whip that he uses to brush away spider webs in "Raiders of the Lost Ark."
Indiana Jones's whip is the perfect prop for action / adventure films because it has a primitive mystique about it that is lost in a genre overflowing with guns and swords. The bullwhip is what makes Indiana Jones unique. There is something mesmerizing about the sound of the crack that emanates from Indiana Jones's Whip. Just the sight of him brandishing it sends audiences into fits of excitement. It has become a symbol. Without his whip, Indiana Jones is just another action hero. With it, he has become a legend to be counted amongst the ranks of Zorro and Allen Quartermain. Not bad for a guy that took his name from the family dog.
