The AK-47 (short for Avtomat Kalashnikova 1947) is an assault rifle used in most Eastern bloc countries during the Cold War. Adopted and standardized in 1947, it was designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov and originally produced by Soviet manufacturer Izhevsk Mechanical Works. The AK-47 was one of the first true assault rifles and, due to its durability and ease of use, remains the most widely used assault rifle. Several countries have even produced their own versions of the AK-47; illegally making it the most widely produced assault rife in the world.
