SIG SAUER or SIGARMS was established in 1985 to import and distribute SIG firearms into the United States. The SIG-SAUER line of handguns was born in the 1970s starting with the SIG-SAUER SIG P220 handgun in 1975 which is still known for its accuracy and durability. SIG SAUER handguns are popular as police side arms and for self defense. The P226 has been used by several U.S. police departments and special forces. Recently the P229 was chosen as one of the official side arms of the Department of Homeland Security.
